Read A Colonist's Diary

  • Remember to share the information in the Help Section prior to starting the activity. Students can read and listen on-line, or you could print copies to read before, during, and after their work with this interactive.
  • There are two versions of Father White's diary contained in the interactive. One version was sent to Lord Baltimore. The other version was sent to priests in the Jesuit order living in Rome. These priests kept track of their members' activities. Users should remember that they can instantly translate letters in the version diary that was sent to Lord Baltimore by selecting the "On" translator button. This will make the text appear more like conventional English used today.
  • You should encourage students to click on highlighted green text to find out more information about that section of the diary.
  • Highly able readers may be able to create a modern-day version of Father White's diary entry. Less skilled readers may benefit by reading this modern version of Father White's text and comparing it with both primary source documents contained in the interactive
